UTSKIFTBARE.

Modular furniture structure, for versatile occasions at IDC

The Industrial Design Center is an open living lab where industry, research and education meet, make and co-create. For this dynamic entrance hall I designed UTSKIFTBARE, a modular structure for versatile purposes. Create & play to make your event, relax, work, project… - furniture. Every part of UTSKIFTBARE. is produced in IDC’s mini factory to show the possibilities of the center.

Parts are available at the openstructures website.

The Industrial Design Center, is the home of many industrial product design students, research facilities, prototyping and even small scale production.

Recently they expanded the building. This new part of the building needed furniture.

After interviewing some stakeholders it started to become clear what the demands of this space were, but also what the wishes were.  Ready to give back to the community I loved being with, I started the design process of UTSKIFTBARE.

I decided to set some extra boundaries to this project to make my path more clear. Introducing not only my own developed style but also the philosophy of openstructures.

Demands set for this project

Exploring both IDC machinery and openstructures values to create an inhouse produced design that is interchangeable within openstructures.

Exploring different production machines at IDC.
Some of them I had to learn from scratch others I had a bit experience in.

Thanks to the lovely help of Brecht and Hannes, I could learn a lot in a short amount of time.

After lots of desk research about openstructures, it was time to try it out. Thanks to the fact that most of them are opensource I could easily get my hands on some files of existing parts and start producing them myself.

Getting familiar with the ratios and the interchangeable feature was good for me to then later create my own parts.

When I got to know the machinery and the system of openstructures. It was time to create my own parts and use the machines by myself.

I got a very iterative hands on prototype method for this project. Trying out many things and adjusting after reviewing the parts.

The evolution of UT_

This part is the base of all my structures and is ideal to connect corners. Many changes were made to make the part as interchangeable as possible. not only with squared stock but also round stock.

3 possible structures so far.
As seating and working tables were mostly wanted by IDC, UTSKIFTBARE. started with these structures.
Many more structures are possible to fit the right function.

Everything is made in house and can easily be produced.
Some parts are a bit more labour intensive. Once you have the parts you can keep using them for different purposes.

Building instructions are made for every structure so you can easily rebuild most used structures.
